Sat 14 Ulverston Lantern Procession 2013 Ulverston residents enjoy workshops where they design and make white paper lanterns that reflect their lives in the town and express their creativity. Tonight, once dark, all lantern-bearers and musicians will process from four corners of the town to converge on the town centre, creating a river of light, which progresses to Ford Park Community Playing Fields for more spectacle, including fireworks. Free. Processions start at dusk and the Ford Park finale is around 9:30 pm. NB Some roads closed and parking is at a premium. This year the route takes in Carlisle, Wigton, Aspatria, Cockermouth, Maryport (via Dearham) then down the coast to Workington and Whitehaven, back inland to peek at Mockerkin Tarn, skirt Crummock Water and Buttermere, then tackling Honister Pass and down into Keswick via Borrowdale and Derwent Water, through central Lake District along Thirlmere, Grasmere, Rydal Water and Windermere to Bowness and east to end at Kendal. Sat 28 Wainwright Society Lecture Local MP Rory Stewart delivers the annual Wainwright Society Memorial Lecture at the Rheged Centre, Penrith. Like Wainwright, Rory is a prodigious walker and has trekked across Pakistan, Iran, India, Nepal and Afghanistan and as well as reflecting on these adventures, Rory will share his favourite memories of his 400 mile walk around his own constituency.
